On Wednesday, September 9, UAYD is sponsoring a lecture and discussion called "Fresh Ideas and Politics: Getting Elected as a Young Person," featuring Fayetteville Alderman Matthew Petty, the youngest member of the Fayetteville City Council - elected at age 24.Matt is the founder of SocialSustenance.Org and the NWA Sustainability Center, co-chair of the Omni Center's Carbon Caps Task Force, was a global warming delegate to Citizens' First Congress in Little Rock, and designed an environmental leadership program for Fayetteville public schools. He also organized the 2007 Step It Up rally for climate change and designed a teacher development program on sustainability literacy for the U of A. He is also a spokesperson for America In Bloom in Fayetteville.
In November 2008, Matt was elected after campaigning on an "Economy and Ecology" platform, and partially credits his close win to social media.
His focuses on the city council include working to create a green job training center with a local community college; guiding real estate developers towards business models that include urban agriculture; and helping school district design 21st century high schools.
